ABOUT THE SCULPTURE

Ulla Viotti has created To the Memory of our History in two parts that resemble each other but are not quite alike. The work can be seen as e.g. two columns or staircases complementing each other.

Viotti often uses bricks as her primary material, and in this case the red and black burnt bricks are the result of a charcoal firing.

Originally, the sculpture was created for a three and a half centennial exhibition commemorating The Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) in the German city of Osnabrück. Viotti was invited to participate in the exhibition as the representative of Sweden.

Viotti wanted to picturize the division caused by the war but perhaps also the common features of the two parties in the conflict. Thus, the work consists of two similar but separate parts.

The sculpture may give associations to heritage ruins which stand as a strong relic of bygone days.
