ABOUT THE SCULPTURE

The two reclining figures by the ceramicist Betty Engholm are sculpted in a way so that they almost amalgamate with the base they are resting on.

Engholm is particularly known for her outdoor ceramic furniture which almost invites people for a sit-down. She often uses graphic black and white patterns taking their inspiration from a zebra, from the branches in a treetop or from another organic expression.

Placed in areas of natural beauty, people are invited to stop short and sense the beautiful surroundings, if only for a short while.

Betty Engholm was part of Clay Today, a group of ceramic artists. The group aimed at giving ceramics a place in art history on equal terms with other art forms. The group members were among the initiators of establishing a ceramic museum in Middelfart. The museum opened in 1994 and after extensive expansion in 2015, it changed its name to CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark – a reference to the passionate people behind the museum.
