ABOUT THE SCULPTURE

Ceramic artist Betty Engholm has a special ability to convey expressions and emotions. Even when her sculptures of human bodies by and large only consist of a torso and a roughly sketched face, she is capable of conveying the essence of a feeling.

Engholm often uses the “tadpole technique”, in other words, sculpting with lumps of clay shaped like tadpoles which are pressed together gradually as the figure is shaped. This technique leaves the surface with a vibrant and lively texture enabling even large formats to appear light.

Betty Engholm was part of Clay Today, a group of ceramic artists. The group aimed at giving ceramics a place in art history on equal terms with other art forms. The group members were the initiators of what is today known as CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark.
