ABOUT THE SCULPTURE
With the sculpture Magma, ceramicist Morten Løbner Espersen wants to pass on the feeling of being moved in a special, deep way – like being in love.
The tale takes a typical form as its starting point: the jar which traditionally has both a practical and an aesthetic value. The unusually big jar with its bubbling glazes is a retelling of the idea of the jar.
Løbner is a bit of a master of glazes. Covered in eleven layers of glaze, the jar seems almost alive and thus challenges the aesthetics of the original jar. Apparently, the work looks as if it could melt away, but it proudly remains.
The title Magma and the many shades of colour give associations to an erupting volcano. The jar is rough and impressive and yet tactile and fascinating. Magma expresses a kind of controlled wildness. Much like being in love.
