ABOUT THE SCULPTURE

The relief of red bricks was originally intended to be built into the wall of a building. It was created by the American ceramicist Charles (Chuck) Wissinger on the occasion of an international symposium on Funen in 1990, arranged by Clay Today – a group of ceramicists that played a significant role in the Danish ceramic art scene. The group was instrumental in establishing CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art in 1994.

Wissinger bought the bricks at Tommerup Ceramic Workcenter and created a work very much in line with the primary theme of the symposium: Art in space and how ceramics interacts with architecture. The pattern has been scraped into the bricks while they were still wet and moldable. A closer look reveals many small figurative details.

Wissinger’s work was one of the first in the CLAY Collection.
