ABOUT THE SCULPTURE
Per Ahlmann’s work The Hesitation of Everything stands as a steady and compelling beacon at the high end of the cemetery.
The roughly modelled base contrasts the stylized drop which is the main element of the work. The shaping of the drop has been created by using an extruder which shapes the clay into a long tube. Subsequently, the tube has been suspended on an upright frame with a crosspiece to support the wet and malleable clay. The force of gravity and a slow drying process have created the shape. Then it has been lifted off the crosspiece, turned upside down and thus left with a geometrical shape at the lower end. Ahlmann is pleased with this detail, especially as it bears witness to a past and a present – a symbol suitable for a cemetery.
The hesitation of Everything is placed on top of the drainage system connected to Lillebælt. The water – the drop, the sea – is essential to the shape of the work and thus the work is associated with a cyclical symbolism where everything is part of a larger cycle.
